Merino, alpaca and cashmere. A few words about the properties.
Autumn and winter are times when we all dream of wrapping ourselves in something warm and soft. A good quality woollen jumper is an essential part of every wardrobe. But under the term 'wool' there are many different types with different origins and properties. Which one to choose? We give you a hint!
A touch of luxury
In winter we all look for clothing that will keep us effectively warm. But the more sensitive are deterred from wool by the fact that it "bites". The ideal solution for such people will be cashmere. It is the most luxurious and the most expensive variety of wool, but its higher price in comparison to the classic yarn does not come from nowhere. Cashmere owes its name to its origin. It is obtained from the Kashmir goats that live in the Himalayas. Due to the temperatures there, which fluctuate by up to 40 degrees Celsius, these animals have had to adapt accordingly. The undercoat helps them to survive the extreme temperatures. This is what is combed out - usually by hand - and then used to produce cashmere. Cashmere fibre is several times warmer than classic wool, although it is thinner. Cashmere is extremely pleasant to the touch and shines gently. Moreover, the structure of cashmere causes air to be trapped in the fibres, creating a protective layer which insulates perfectly against the cold and in summer against the heat. At the same time the yarn is very well permeable for water vapour. All this makes cashmere clothing ideal even for the most demanding customers. Even a touch of this yarn gives the jumper or scarf a luxurious softness.
Inca gold
Fluffy, friendly-looking alpacas are increasingly being bred in Poland. They are native to South America and their wool was already known in the times of the Incan Empire. Due to its origin and valued properties, alpaca is often called "gold of the Incas". Alpacas, as well as cashmere goats come from the mountains, so they had to develop wool resistant to extreme temperature fluctuations. One of the advantages of alpaca fibre is that, thanks to air pockets located on the entireOne of the advantages of alpaca fibre is that it has excellent insulating and thermo-regulating properties, thanks to the air pockets located throughout the hair. Alpaca wool isoften compared to cashmere because, like cashmere, it is light, breathable, odourless, has excellent wicking properties and is resistant to dirt. It also comes in 22 natural colours and, thanks to its low lanolin content, is not allergenic. Compared to cashmere, however, alpaca wool is more rigid. The most prized and finest variety is baby alpaca. This does not mean, however, that it comes from young animals. The term refers to the thickness of the fibre measured in microns. The thinner the fibre, the fewer microns itóand consequently greater fineness. All this makes alpaca wool worth getting to know better!
For special tasks
When the temperature bars drop below zero, you need clothes for special tasks. One of the warmest varieties of wool is often considered to be merino, which is sourced from merino sheep. Originating from the mountains of New Zealand and Australia, merinos have also had to face extreme weather conditions. Their wool has such valuable properties and a high degree of thermoregulation that it is often used in the production of thermal clothing. When the temperature is high, the merino fibre expands, allowing excess heat to pass through to the outside, and when it is cold it shrinks, causing the product made from it to start warming us up. Merino wool jumpers are very warm, the advantage of this type of yarn is also the ability to absorb moisture and evaporate it outside. Merino also has the advantage of being odour resistant, because even after prolonged use, the fabric does not emit odours which wouldówhich are often present in products made from traditional sheep's wool. So even in the freezing cold you won't be afraid of wearing a Merino wool jumper!
